In a landmark step toward modernizing education in The Gambia, Africa Missions Global (AMG), in partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, recently facilitated a training workshop focused on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. The one-day event, which drew over 200 educators—including teachers, principals, and school administrators—was held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Centre in The Gambia.
The training was officially opened by Hon. Baboucarr Bouy, Minister of Public Service, Administrative Reform, Policy Coordination and Delivery, who represented the Vice President of The Gambia. He stressed the importance of embracing AI not just as a trend but as a necessary tool for national development. He also commended AMG for its proactive initiative in equipping educators with modern tools to enhance the learning experience.
A Message of Strategic Hope from Africa Missions Global
Delivering the keynote address, Mrs. Adepeju Adebajo, Africa Missions Global’s National Coordinator for The Gambia, emphasized the importance of preparing teachers for the future of education. She highlighted that while AI may raise questions or fears for some, it presents an opportunity to transform teaching and learning when approached with the right knowledge and tools.
“AI is not here to replace teachers,” Mrs. Adebajo noted. “It is here to assist them, to make their work easier, more impactful, and to prepare students for a world that is already being shaped by technology.”
Her remarks were centered on capacity-building, encouraging educators to be bold and curious about new technologies. She also pointed out that AMG’s mission remains rooted in empowering communities through knowledge and innovation, and this training is a reflection of that core commitment.
Understanding AI: A Practical Introduction
Facilitators from AMG’s regional and international branches for the workshop, Dr. Fola Ojuola and Dr. Sesan Akinnawo, guided participants through the basics of AI, its practical applications in the classroom, and how it can help improve student engagement and outcomes. The session included interactive presentations and real-life examples that helped demystify AI for educators who may have had little prior exposure.
They also addressed ethical considerations in AI use and stressed the need for responsible integration in education systems.
A Learning Revolution in Motion
This AI training represents more than just upskilling—it’s a deliberate move by AMG to ensure that The Gambia is not left behind in the fast-paced AI revolution. By empowering educators, the Mission is extending its influence into the future of learning, aligning with its broader goals of community empowerment and innovation.
It is also important to note that the participants responded with much enthusiasm and asked insightful questions that were answered accordingly.
This Training Aligns with AMG’s Core Pillars
• Reach: Providing access to cutting-edge knowledge.
• Restore: Enhancing education systems with relevant tools.
• Empower: Building capacity within African communities to drive their own development.
